AKAs Donate Little Dresses for Africa

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Africare partnered with Little Dresses for Africa (LDFA) to collect and send 29,108 pillowcase dresses to girls located in communities throughout South Africa and Liberia. The Upsilon Sigma Omega Chapter committed to supporting the momentous effort by sending 50 dresses — one dress for each of its current members. The Upsilon Sigma Omega Chapter joins Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. chapters around the world to support Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s quest to collect and distribute these dresses directly to communities in Africa that will be chosen by partner Africare.  Africare is a non-governmental program committed to improving the quality of life of people in Africa.  Once received, Africare will work directly with their local staff to identify communities across the countries to receive the dress donations.  The dresses were taken by the Upsilon Sigma Omega Chapter delegation to the 2016 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Boule, which was held in Atlanta, GA from July 9-14.

The pillowcase dress service project was launched as a national campaign by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s international President Dorothy Buchanan Wilson in conjunction with Alpha Kappa Alpha’s international program Target V: Global Impact, one of the sorority’s five programs of service. Each of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s 993 national and international chapters had been asked to join the challenge of bringing 29,108 pillowcases to the 2016 Boule Conference this past week in Atlanta.  Almost 35,000 dresses were collected, exceeding the 29,108 dress goal.
