Taking A.C.T.I.O.N. for Voter Registration

USO Voter Registration Drive

On Tuesday, February 2, 2016, the Upsilon Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., held a voter registration drive for the students at Marlboro County High School.  In partnership with the Theta Lambda Phi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Fraternity, Inc., the Cheraw Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Marlboro County High School the sorority and fraternity members registered students during the lunch sessions that day and during the basketball game that evening.   Forty-seven students were registered during the lunch sessions and seven students were registered during the evening, for a total of fifty-four newly registered voters.  Also, assisting at the voter registration drive was Ms. Covington.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has adopted a voter awareness-focused program through their International Connections Committee that encourages its members to “Take A.C.T.I.O.N.” A.C.T.I.O.N. stands for Advocate, Communicate, Train, Influence, Organize and Network. Chapters and sorority members are to “organize” voter education, registration and mobilization efforts in their local communities. Through concerted efforts, sorority members are working to assist in making eligible residents aware of their voting rights, local voter identification requirements in their communities, and the importance of exercising the right to vote in all elections.

The Upsilon Sigma Omega Chapter is encouraging anyone who is not currently registered to make every effort to get registered for this important election year.  If you have any questions about voter registration you can contact Denise Washington at (843) 479-0603 or the Marlboro County Voter Registration Office located at 119 S. Marlboro Street, Bennettsville, SC 29512, (843) 479-5612.
